10 Days Rift Valley and Western Kenya Circuit.

Kenya is a magical country of exquisite beauty, untouched nature filled with animals, and adventure around every corner. At Savage Wilderness we want to take you on a rollercoaster ride, filled with rafting, mt biking, trekking and of course a little Safari.

We go far from the beaten track, taking you to the less explored corners of Kenya where you will experience adrenaline-pumping action as well as relaxing views into some of Kenya’s finest game conservancies.

Day 1:

Meet in Nairobi and transfer to Lake Naivasha (1.5 hrs), in the heart of the rift valley. Your first stop will be Sanctuary farm to experience walking with some of Kenya’s most habituated wild animals. It’s a stunning spot with giant Acacia Trees and a lakeside filled with giraffes, zebra and 5 types of antelope.

From here we will carry on around the lake to Carnellys camp, where you can enjoy the spectacular views as you relax around their incredible bar and pizzeria. Today no meals are included as we stop at malls for lunch and Carnellys is a restaurant.

Day 2:

Start the day off with a Boat Safari on Lake Naivasha. Pack your binoculars as this is a haven for lake birds. Enjoy views of fish eagles swooping down for their fresh fish meals. You will also see colobus monkeys, hippos and more incredible birdlife.

From Naivasha, we then jump back into the bus and drive 5 hrs into the heart of the Maasai Mara. Here we will arrive at Bandas in the wild on the banks of the Mara River.

Day 3:

The adventure begins as you jump onto the saddle, for a bike ride across the incredible plains of the Mara Savanah. It’s not just cycling for fun, but with the aim of reaching your fly camp in the middle of the African bush. Where you will settle into your private campsite around the fire to tell stories of the incredible, days’ adventures.

Day 4:

After breakfast, you will be picked up by a 4×4 Landcruiser to head out on a magical safari around the Maasai Mara. Search for the big 5 as you cruise around enjoying one of the most incredible safari destinations in the world. You will then head back to Bandas in the wild for a relaxing, late afternoon swim in the pool.

Day 5:

Depart the Maasai Mara and head up to Kakamega Rainforest. An early start is followed by the longest drive of the trip (6hrs). When you arrive in Kakamega you will be staying at Rondo Retreat: beautiful wooden cabins set amongst the dense rainforest. Kakamega Rainforest is the last remaining part, “in Kenya”, of the great equatorial rainforest that stretched from West to East Africa. Completely different fauna and birdlife make for amazing walks through this jungle.

After you arrive, relax in the Grand Rondo Retreat lounge, or go for a guided nature walk through the forest.

Day 6:

Another highlight of your trip: rafting through the Kakamega Rainforest. This is a brilliant mix of scenic flat water with giant palms and wild orchids, as well as raging jungle rapids. You will see monkeys swinging through the trees, jumping over the rafts and the amazing red of the Nandie Flame tree set against the lush green jungle. After a full day of rafting, you will be very glad to pull into your campsite for the night with still some rafting to go for the next day.

Day 7:

An early start, and a half day of the river as you raft out of the incredible Kakamega river. After an early lunch, you will jump back on the bus with a 4-hour drive back towards central Kenya and the last stop on the trip; Soysambu Conservancy. Arrive for sundowners and a lovely evening in the Luxury Bonhams Soysmabu camp.

Day 8:

An early start to pack your belongings and the campsite, then head out on a Camel Safari, start by loading up the camels with all the gear, then join the caravan as you trek across the African Savannah to find a suitable camping spot for the night. The highlight of walking with the camels is that you blend into nature with wild animals not so much as giving you a glance, as well as the unique behavioural traits of this highly amusing animal: the camel.

Camp under the stars next to Lake Elementaita a UNESCO world heritage site made famous as a flamingo breeding ground. Put the camels to bed followed by yourself for a well-deserved rest.

Day 9:

An optional early morning, before breakfast, walk up one of the many volcanic craters. Followed by breakfast in camp. Then walk out of your camp, camels in tow, along the banks of Lake Elementaita, enjoying beautiful views of flamingos and pelicans in this unique UNESCO World Heritage site. Arrive for a slap-up lunch put on by Serena Hotel, before heading back to Bonhams Camp for a sundowner around the campfire.

Day 10:

After an early morning game drive to say goodbye to the incredible Soysambu Conservancy we will drive back to Nairobi where we highly recommend some last-minute activities before you leave us. Including the giraffe centre, where you can hand-feed giraffes and Daphney Sheldricks. 10 Days, Mt Kenya, Safari and Rafting

Get the full Mt Kenya experience as you make your way around and over the mountain all while experiencing rafting, safari and one of the greatest hikes in Kenya.

Day 1: Meet in Nairobi and Transfer to Savage Wilderness camp on the banks of the Tana River. You will be staying in one of our cute little cottages with full board meals. Sagana is known as the adventure capital of Kenya, so get ready for an experience of a lifetime. Late afternoon we will start with a warm-up hike up Kiambichu hill for a welcome sundowner.

Day 2: Breakfast at 8:30 and then a 3 hr drive to the Mt Kenya forest. We enter the forest at 1600m and continue up to the 1st campsite at the Chogoria gate. Your evening meal is served and you can relax around a campfire before retiring to the sounds of the Mt. Kenya rainforest. This is a driving day with a two-hour acclimatization walk in the afternoon.

Day 3: Breakfast is served at 0730, after which bags are packed and you leave the campsite on foot. Arrive at Lake Ellis at an altitude of 3200m. You will walk through moorland and Tussock grass. The Heather and Proteas are quite beautiful, particularly when some of the other flowers are in bloom, such as the Gladiolus, Kniphofia, and Senecio. The remainder of the afternoon is spent relaxing in camp before dinner and another early night.

Day 4: The walk on Day 4 is well off the beaten track. You will walk around the lake, cross over the valley, and follow a ridge up the mountain. Enjoy breathtaking views over the Gorges Valley and back towards Itinguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing before continuing down to Lake Michaelson, one of the most spectacular campsites on the whole mountain.

Day 5: A hard hike out from the colosseum and up to Minto’s Hut at 4200m and our night’s camp. The afternoon is once again spent relaxing at camp, with a 10- minute walk to the “Temple” being well worth the effort. This is a 500ft vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge. They look as if they are praying! An early night is recommended as you are attempting the summit the next day.

Day 6: You are woken at 0215am in the morning (if you actually sleep at all) with a cup of tea or coffee. The majority of the walk is in the dark so you are at least well on the way to Pt Lenana, via Simba Col by sunrise. You finish the final grunt to the top hopefully before the clouds have started to move in so that we can capture celebratory photos of you victorious on the summit. We depart the peak via the same route as far as Simba Col. Here we turn left and head on down a steep scree slope to Shiptons Camp arriving by 10 am. After a quick breakfast and short rest, we begin the final 5-hour walk down the mountain to Judmier camp. We will have an early dinner and then go to bed.

PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR MANY OF OUR CLIENTS THIS REMAINS THE SINGLE HARDEST DAY OF THEIR LIVES. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Day 7: After a later start and a good breakfast, we leave camp and walk the final 10km down a dirt track to the park gate. Here you are met by your transport and say goodbye to your porters and guide (if they have done a good job please tip them!). The vehicle is loaded and you head on to Ol Pejeta conservancy and a night at Sweet Waters.

Day 8: It’s Safari time!!!! Head out in a 4×4 Landcruiser with a professional guide, searching for the animals of Kenya. Ol Pejeta is one of the best places for a Safari in Kenya with your chances of seeing the big 5 enormous. The highlights will be seeing copious elephants, endangered black rhinos and spending time at the chimpanzee sanctuary. Then back to Sweet Waters for another night in luxury.

Day 9: Back into the vehicle for a small transfer back to Savage Wilderness camp. Here we will go for an afternoon of White Water Rafting on Kenya’s famous tana river. Navigate the rapids of this beautiful section of the river, while keeping your eyes out for spectacular river birds like the kingfisher. Retire to your cottage for a well-deserved rest and your last night with us.

Day 10: A two-hour bike ride on a fantastic single track on the hills behind our camp, followed by an early lunch. Then time to head back to Nairobi and off on your next adventure.
